What is a cough?

A cough is a natural reflex that protects your lungs.1 When we breathe in,
certain particles known as irritants (e.g. dust and dirt), enter our body
together with the air.2 The body automatically responds by clearing away
these particles through coughing.3

Why and How do we cough?

facts about coughing

Irritants stimulate the
nerves in your throat
and airways.3

The nerves carry a signal to
your brain3

The brain responds by sending a
signal to the chest and abdominal
muscles to take rapid and deep
breathe to expel the irritant.3

With the air flow at a speed
of close to 50 miles/hour (80
kilometers an hour),
coughing propels air and
particles out of your lungs
and throat.3

Good cough vs Bad cough –
How can you tell the difference?

An occasional cough is normal and healthy.3 However, if your cough is persistent or
is accompanied by other symptoms such as runny nose, acid reflux, shortness of
breath, chest pain and increased mucus production, it is most likely a sign of an
ongoing illness and needs medical attention.3

22.45% of pilgrims reported that cough was the most
frequent complaint during Hajj.4
