Different cough sounds mean different types of coughs

Dry, hacking sound: Dry cough¹¹

In asthma, dry cough is accompanied by wheezing, chest tightness and shortness of breath⁸⁷

Soupy, with wheezing and rattling sound: Wet, productive cough⁸⁷

Produces sputum and may be associated with tightness in chest⁸⁷

Barking sound: “Croup”

Happens when a virus causes the airways to swell.

Caused by infection or a disease in which the trachea and airways collapse with breathing in adults⁸⁷

“Whooping” sound: Whooping cough (pertussis)

Marked by a “whoop” made when gasping for breath after a severe coughing attack.⁸⁸
