If you have a cough, when should you go to the doctor?

Please contact your doctor immediately for any of the following concerns8

  • Spitting up blood
  • Chest pain or trouble breathing
  • Vomiting
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Cough which began after close contact with someone who has whooping cough
  • Cough lasts more than 8 weeks
  • Cough starts to get better and then gets worse
  • Lung problem such as asthma or cystic fibrosis (CF) and have frequent or chronic cough.

Talk to your healthcare provider if the pattern of the cough changes.

How do I know if my child's cough is serious?


Consult your child’s doctor if you notice any of the following:23

  • Cough that lasted longer than 3 weeks
  • High temperature, hot and shivery feeling
  • Coughing continues for a long time, worsens at night.

The need for specialist care


Your primary healthcare doctor often will be able to answer your questions about your cough. In case he/she is unable to find the reason for your cough or find solutions to reduce your cough, you may be referred to a lung specialist (pulmonologist)8.
