What is chronic bronchitis?
Chronic bronchitis is a form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) 2, 3. COPD is a medical term for a group of conditions that obstruct the lungs, making it hard to breathe 2. COPD conditions get gradually worse over time 2. The main types of COPD are 1:
- Chronic bronchitis
- Asthma
- Emphysema
Studies show that as many as 74% of people who were diagnosed with COPD have chronic bronchitis 4.
What causes chronic bronchitis?
The main cause of chronic bronchitis is cigarette smoke 2, 4. Inhaling tobacco smoke, either by smoking actively or from second-hand smoke can irritate the lungs’ airways 2, 4. In fact, 75% of people who develop chronic bronchitis are smokers or used to smoke 2.
Other causes of chronic bronchitis include 4:
- Inhaling other irritants such as smog, industrial pollutants, and toxic chemicals
- Having had a history of repeated infections
- Rarely, a genetic deficiency 2
Risk factors for chronic bronchitis
In addition to smoking, there are a few other factors that can raise a person’s risk of developing chronic bronchitis 2, 4. These include:
- Being over 40 years old
- A family history of chronic bronchitis
- Repeated exposure to chemical pollutants such as ammonia and sulfur dioxide
- Having other pre-existing conditions such as asthma or cystic fibrosis
What are the symptoms of chronic bronchitis?
Chronic bronchitis occurs when your bronchial tubes are inflamed and irritated 2, 3. Bronchial tubes are airways that help carry oxygen into your lungs and carbon dioxide out of your lungs 2.
When the bronchial tubes are irritated, they build up mucus; the swelling combined with the mucus makes it harder for your lungs to breathe, causing the following symptoms 2, 3, 4:
- A frequent, productive cough; this is the main symptom in bronchitis 2, 4. A chronic bronchitis cough lasts at least 3 months in a year and occurs for 2 years in a row 3, 4.
- A wheezing or whistling sound when you breathe
- Shortness of breath, especially when you exercise
- Tightness or pain in your chest
In severe cases, chronic bronchitis may also cause 2:
- Unintentional weight loss
- Muscle weakness in your lower limbs
- Swelling in your ankles, feet, or legs
See your doctor or healthcare professional if you have any of these symptoms or if you are worried 2.
How serious is chronic bronchitis?
For some people with chronic bronchitis, the disease progresses to shortness of breath, and there is an increased risk of mortality 4. However, treatments can relieve the symptoms and measures like pulmonary rehabilitation can help slow down the progression of the disease 4.
Chronic bronchitis can also put you at risk of various complications 4. These include 4:
- Pneumonia
- Acute bronchitis (caused by an infection) 1
- Disability caused by shortness of breath
- Emphysema
It’s important to discuss these with your physician and take some precautionary measures. For instance, your physician may recommend regular flu and pneumonia vaccinations to stave off these potential complications 2, 4.
Chronic bronchitis treatments
There is currently no cure for chronic bronchitis 2, 4. However, there are several things you can do to relieve the symptoms and live more comfortably 2, 4.
Bronchitis treatment options include lifestyle changes such as:
- Quitting smoking
- Avoiding cigarette smoke and other irritants
- Following a healthy diet and exercise schedule to strengthen the muscles that help you breathe
There are also medications available. Speak to your healthcare professional about a treatment that is right for you.

Make an appointment with your doctor or healthcare professional to have your cough examined and receive a diagnosis. In your appointment, your doctor will ask you questions about 2:
To find out if you have chronic bronchitis, your physician will have to rule out other potential causes 2, 4. To do so, they may ask for various tests, including 2, 4:
One of the conditions that your physician will have to rule out is pneumonia 4.
Bronchitis symptoms and pneumonia are similar. Both pneumonia and chronic bronchitis cause a cough3. However, in pneumonia, the cough can be dry or wet (productive), depending on whether the pneumonia is caused by a virus or a bacterium 1, 3. By comparison, chronic bronchitis cough is almost always productive 4.
While both pneumonia and bronchitis cause inflammation of the lungs, they affect different parts of the respiratory system, and they have different causes 3.
Namely, bronchitis is inflammation of the mucous tissue that lines the airways, whereas pneumonia is inflammation of the little air sacs inside your lungs (called alveoli) 3. Alveoli help oxygen and carbon dioxide move quickly between the lungs and your blood vessels 3.
Pneumonia can be caused by a bacterial, viral, or fungal infection 3. 90% of the time, acute bronchitis is caused by a common virus 3. Chronic bronchitis, however, is a form of COPD and is usually caused by smoking or other irritants 2, 3, 4
Your physician will recommend the best course of action based on your diagnosis and the cause of your bronchitis.
Treatment options for bronchitis include lifestyle changes and/or medications 4. Some medications can help to 4:
Doctors do not usually prescribe antibiotics for chronic bronchitis 4.
If you’re a smoker, the most important thing you can do is to stop smoking 2, 4. You should also avoid pollutants and irritants at work or at home 4.
Speak to a healthcare professional for a diagnosis and advice on the best strategy going forward. Your physician may recommend ways to rehabilitate your lungs, such as an exercise program or techniques to help you breathe better 4.
